(FRI/SAT) Redmond Derby Days Carnival
Redmond Derby Days celebrate its 70th anniversary in 2010! It’s a summer tradition that came to life at the end of the Depression. Derby Days began as a drive to raise money for downtown holiday decorations and school athletic equipment. The Redmond Bicycle Derby was the outgrowth of a small town's community spirit and is now the nation's longest running bicycle race. It includes activities for young and old.

The focus is on Ballard's maritime history at the 36th annual Seafair festival. Rides and games of skill -- the annual carnival is part of Redmond's Seafair festival, Derby Days. Thursday is discount day (7 rides or games for $15). The City of Redmond's annual Seafair festival celebrates its 70th anniversary this year. On Friday night, Beatles cover band The Nowhere Men play Redmond City Hall. On Saturday, come out for a kids' and grand parade, entertainment for children, an eco-fair, Derby Dash 5K, bicycle criterium, free Field of Fun for kids (bouncies, hula hoops, sprinklers, more), fireworks at 10 p.m., and carnival at Old Redmond Schoolhouse Community Center. All other events occur at Redmond City Hall.

(SAT/SUN) Mercer Island Summer Celebration
Mercer Island's Seafair bash celebrates the 50th anniversary of Mercer Island's incorporation with a 1960s theme. Fun includes a fireworks party at Luther Burbank Park on Saturday night (about 10:15 p.m.), plus a street fair , costume contest, boat rides ($10), entertainment, and activities at Town Center and Mercerdale Park. Kids' fun includes inflatables, train rides, puppet and magic shows, and arts and crafts in the KidZone (wristband $15). Festivities kick off Saturday with a parade at 10 a.m.; Sunday gets started with a pancake breakfast, 8 a.m.-noon, near the Recycle Center. Click on the link for a full schedule.

(SAT) Seafair Pirates Landing
The Seafair Pirates storm Alki Beach at (around) 11:30 a.m-noon., but you'll find activities at the beach all day, including music and kids' fun. 500 Seafair Pirates kits will be available for the kids, beginning at 10:30 a.m., and kids who come dressed in their pirate best can be part of a pirate look-alike contest. The beach-storming is one of the traditional Seafair kickoff events, and part of West Seattle's month-long Hi-Yu Festival. There are bouncies for kids ($6-$10), free root beer samples, and more. (SAT-TUES) Low Tide
It's the lowest tide of the summer this weekend - head down to a local beach for a look-see around the tideline. Beach naturalists from the Seattle Aquarium will be on hand to help you tell a moon snail egg case from a lion's mane jelly. FREE. Approx 10am-2:00pm each day.
